How far along am I?

A home test can tell you that a hormone is present. It cannot tell you where the pregnancy is. It cannot tell you how far along. Those two facts change what any later decision even is.

Why location matters

An ectopic pregnancy can still make a home test turn positive. The pregnancy is outside the uterus, or in a place that cannot continue. The approved abortion-pill regimen is not treatment for ectopic pregnancy. Pain and bleeding after pills may look like a ruptured ectopic. A ruptured ectopic can be fatal.

One-sided pelvic pain, pain in the tip of the shoulder, spotting with dizziness, or fainting is not a chat-window question. Go to an ER, or call 911. The fuller emergency page is Sharp pain on one side, or bleeding that won’t stop.

A positive test is not a location. A mailed pill cannot tell you the pregnancy is in the uterus. An ultrasound can.

Why dates matter

FDA-approved labeling for the mifepristone regimen is through 70 days gestation. The Medication Guide says it is not approved for ending pregnancies that are further along. A pack in a mailbox cannot date you.

Cardiac activity typically begins in the sixth week of pregnancy as dated from the last period, which is about three weeks after fertilization. Sources give a range, not one day. At that stage the heart is a beating tube, not a four-chambered heart; it is still a functioning human heart.

A limited ultrasound at a pregnancy center is information. It is not full obstetric care. It will not replace an ER if you are crashing.
